Another of the phyllite carvings I produced during my Shetland residency, with minimal carving of just a single groove, following the natural contours of the rock.

Burn is a Shetlandic word for a stream, which this carving reminded me of. All the phyllite carvings describe the Shetland landscape, to my eyes, in a kind of microcosm of form, colour and texture, one of the beauties of stone as a material is that its form and texture has apparent similarities whether it be a small rock or a huge cliff face. I wanted to explore this with these carvings.

The landscape in Shetland, because it is hilly with so few trees, is noticeably 'cut' by roads, rivers and agricultural working such as peat-cutting. Again I wanted to illustrate some aspect of this with this work.
