  Jellybean Pony coprolite

The ' Jellybean Pony ' Coprolite  1997/98   Limestone 13 x 15 x 38cm

PRIVATE COLLECTION

A Coprolite is fossilized excrement, the perverse side of my nature thought it would be good to carve some fossilized excrement, but the idea of a soft form being made permanent in a hard material was also interesting on a more serious level. The title also reflects my interest at the time in giving nicknames to artworks where, hypothetically, the original artist (or prehistoric animal) had not left records documenting their life and work in the great detail we are so used to today.

I think this stone is Hopton Wood Limestone, it looks like it, but it also looks like some Portuguese limestones. Whatever, it was very nice to carve, nice texture, fine detail easy to accomplish and it would take a polish if desired.
