This piece was inspired on my Scalloway residency by examples I had seen of Viking gaming boards scratched into slate. I liked the contrast between the dark, irregular mass of the stone and the fine, clear geometry of the grid pattern. Rather than exploring ideas to do with gaming, my grid represents more the idea of marking out territory in a landscape that is still virtually wilderness, this piece is linked to the 'wirhoose' pieces in this respect.
