This is life-size clay maquette I did to prepare for the marble bust I am currently working on. Having never done a realistic figurative sculpture before, I thought it would be a good introduction and help me learn the measuring and observational techniques needed to do this type of work.

I also thought I could use it to work from when working on the marble, but as I am doing a self-portrait I can just measure my own head as I'm always available! If I was carving a bust of an absent subject a good clay model would be essential.
